A Full-time Emergency Service. As well as ICU, MICU at
Leonard Hospital we have a 24/7 Casualty Department functioning with qualified casualty Medical Officers and Nurses.
The Casualty Department is equipped to provide First Aid for Trauma, Accident and the Critically Ill who are subsequently shifted to the ICU.
We have a well-equipped ICU set up where we provide quality health service to critical Road Traffic Accident cases with variable degrees of trauma including Head Injuries and Poly Trauma.
Respiratory Emergency cases like Obstructive Airway Diseases, Pulmonary Tuberculosis,
Bronchiectases as well as for Cardiac Emergencies like Myocardial Infarction, Pulmonary Edema,
Congestive Heart Failure, Cerebral Vascular Diseases with different types of Neurological Deficiencies,
Seizure Disorders and different types of Poison cases (insecticide, herbicide, oleander seed, datura, chemicals, acids, alkalis, tablets) with acute reparatory depression, also Snake bite, Insect bite etc. There are different types of trauma with Hemopneumothorax requiring intercostal drainage, Shock with Multiorgan failure,
Diabetic Ketoacidosis, Metabolic
Encephalopathy, Hanging cases and patients who need ventilator support for critical care management.
Weekly Mobile Health Camps are conducted in different villages situated in and around Batlagundu. Free monthly camps are organized at Leonard Hospital by participation of different specialities.
Other Extension Services
Seeing the condition of the economically disadvantaged and working women of the locality a Day-care Creche programme was initiated in the 1980s called Sisu Bhavan.
• The aim is to give an opportunity for mothers to work and earn their livelihood and to become independent persons.
• At present (2018) there 45 to 50 children under 3 years of age taken care of by Sr Marie Louise and two other staff.
• The children are offered milk and lunch and are taught play-rhymes and universal values. Dances, prayers, learning and growth promoting activities are all part of their day.
The humanitarian approach is to give medicines and care for the other felt needs of life and soul.
This approach led Leonard Hospital to undertake awareness programs like, Health education, Sangam forming, Evening Study Centres, Technical training, Milk Society, Medical Camps, Antenatal Checkups, Tuberculosis Eradication programme, Small Savings and Self-employment programmes all in 156 villages covering two blocks.
The 2nd of July, 1996 was a significant day, marking an important milestone in the history of Leonard Hospital: the long awaited dream of having a School of Nursing became a reality. Run by the Sisters of the Cross of Chavanod, Batlagundu, Madurai Province, the School shares the motto of heading TOWARDS WHOLENESS IN LOVE AND SERVICE. The School was begun under the board of Nursing Education of the Christian Medical Association and the first batch of 20 students began their studies.
On the 15th of July, 1998, the Board of Nursing Education of the Tamil Nadu State Government gave us recognition. The School started with an aim of training the young women who by the dedicated and selfness service will bring wholeness to many in the footsteps of Christ, the Divine Master & Healer.
The Claudine School of Nursing offers a Diploma Programme in General Nursing and Midwifery for three and a half years with an intake of twenty students per year. Thus far 360 Trained Nurses have been sent out to the world.
On successful completion of the course, a diploma is awarded by the Tamil Nadu State Government and registered by Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council.
CHALICE was started in Canada with a vision to help orphans, single parents, economically disadvantaged and afflicted children for their Education, Nutrition, Health and Family Welfare.
CHALICE was initiated in the year 1997 in Batlagundu through Leonard Hospital.
We formed forty one Circle Groups among the beneficiaries of 790 women through our Chalice Sponsorship Programme
Savings initiated by the Circle Group members and savings till date comes up to Rs 5 lakhs (500,000 rupees).
Chalice Sponsorship has another parent programme called Skills@chalice which provides Vocational Training like Tailoring and Electrical courses for the sponsored families of economically disadvantaged and dropout youth.
CHALICE has produced 750 students with skills to be self-reliant and productive members of the community.
New Life Centtre has treated hundreds of victims of drugs and alcohol addiction with cost-effective methods with the support of medical consultants and therapeutic professionals.
Alternative therapies are practiced such as individual and family counselling with a group therapy, Yoga, Prayer, Relaxation, Inner Child Healing, Reiki, Pranic Healing and Meditation practices.
